Why "It's Always the Certificate" Is Funny

If you’ve worked in IT long enough you've heard the phrase: “It’s Always the Certificate.”And the reason it’s funny? Because way too often it’s true.

Certificates are everywhere in modern technology. They secure websites, applications, VPNs, wireless networks, email systems, servers, and countless behind-the-scenes services. Every time you see the little lock icon next to an https:// website, a certificate is helping keep that connection secure.

The problem is that certificates expire.  And when they do, things break. 

For years, public certificates lasted two years. Then the industry shortened them to one year. Now the lifespan keeps shrinking even more:

• Around 200 days today
• Dropping to 100 days in 2027
• Expected to fall to just 47 days in 2029

That means IT teams are managing more renewals, more tracking, and more opportunities for something to get missed.

In theory, renewal reminders are sent out before a certificate expires. In reality?

• The email goes to a former employee
• The alert lands in a forgotten mailbox
• An internal certificate has no notifications configured
• Documentation is outdated
• Nobody even knew the certificate existed

Then one morning… BLAM.  The Help Desk phone starts ringing.  IT starts digging.  And Yup - it was the certificate.
